John Hewson’s rise to Liberal Party leadership after just one term in the parliament was meteoric and the Australian people have scarcely had time to get to know him. This, the first biography, tells his story. Political journalist Norman Abjorensen has had full access to John Hewson, and has interviewed his family, his wife Carolyn, and his former wife Margaret. And many friends and business associates, as well as the chief protagonists in politics from both sides of the parliament. He reveals an extraordinarily singleminded man with an inner direction and a phenomenal capacity for hard work. John Hewson took himself from a working-class part of Sydney, won his way to university, and went overseas to further his education where he met some of the world’s most eminent economists and began to think about economics, governments, and Australia. His economic blueprint, which is now Liberal Party policy, embodied in Fightback!, is the culmination of years of work. At last Australian voters have a clear choice between Labor and Liberal: John Hewson’s politics and personal style could not be more different from the vipurative Paul Keating. The book also finds an (occasionally) relaxed John Hewson, a side the public rarely sees. John Hewson has kept himself apart: to him it is policy not personality that matters. Dr Hewson’s political career is set in the context of Liberal politics over the last decade: a sometimes sorry story of faltering ambition, bickering and irresolution as John Howard and Andrew Peacock jostled for power. Under John Hewson’s leadership, the Liberal Party has found a new unity and purpose. Will this carry through into government?
